We are thinking about moving to the Jefferson at Capitol Yards, but want to know if anyone out there has any experience living in the building and their thoughts not only on the building but the area. Thanks.

Can't really speak to the Jefferson particularly, but I have a condo a block away and am bullish on the neighborhood. We're on the outside edge of a tipping point (arguably past it), with Canal Park and the Boilermaker shops on the way within the next 5 months or so. But even if none of that was coming, the location's just ridiculously good, in my opinion. You're two blocks from a green line metro and maybe 6 blocks from an orange line metro, you're walking to the capitol, you're 300 yards from I-395, you're a 15 minute walk to barracks row, and 10 minutes to the Yards Park (which despite the forthcoming construction of the Lumber Shed Shops, is beautiful). The Nats are a nice addition, but even if you don't like baseball, its a great location. Neighborhood is also very dog friendly/oriented, although I'm not sure if The Jefferson allows them.

I also don't know anything about the Jefferson, but I work in the area. It's good and getting nicer. 8th street is pretty cool already, and there's room for new places (commerical / residential) to be built.
The Navy Yard and DOT bring in a lot of people during the day time, and there is a lot of new residential (EYA townhouses and various condos) that seem to bring in enough people at night. There are several nice small businesses around the metro including a coffee shop, wine / liquor store (a nice looking one), a corner market (also looks nice).
There also isn't a lot of sketchiness until you cross south capitol street.

We lived in the Axiom(the building attached to the Jefferson) for 2 years, and we really loved it, but the rent increases of $200/month every time we renewed finally forced us out.
I will tell you this: The Jefferson had a deserved reputation while I lived there for being essentially extended college for well heeled capitol hill interns whose mommies and daddies paid for their first big city apartment. Their rooftop looked like a frat part every friday and saturday night, to the point where the building had to hire security for the weekends to keep the drunkeness and noise down.
That being said, the neighborhood is great. Justin's Cafe is a great neighborhood bar when it's not game day, and youre quickly on a first name basis with the staff. Yards Park is great for lounging or walking through at all hours, and is especially beautiful when lit up at night. There CaBi station immediately next to the apartments and it's a quick 5 minute ride to Barracks Row, where we never had problems with dock blocking. Also, it honestly has to be one of the safest neighborhoods in the city(note: does not apply to SW south of M Street). Another benefit in the Jefferson/Axiom: We lived on the fifth floor, and the building was so well insulated I never once turned my heat on in the two years I lived there and the temp always stayed around 72, which was nice on the wallet considering the building is all-electric.

I lived in the Jefferson for one year - and the earlier comment is spot on: it's basically an enormous frat house. On the weekends, it would just get so, so dirty. Trash/vomit in the hallways...broken glass everywhere outside. This was 2009-2010, so maybe things have improved by now. While I was living there, there was a blog about living at the Jefferson. The blogger has since moved out, but it will give you some ideas on life there: http://jeffersonatcapitolyards.... One thing I will also say - getting my security deposit back after I left took months and months. I found management frustrating when dealing with the late night antics, and I found it frustrating when it was time to leave. On the plus side, the apartments are lovely and it's proximity to 8th street is pretty nice! Also on the minus side, if you have a dog, it was difficult for me to find clean green space to walk her around in near the building.

Thank you to all who shared. I feel a bit better about the neighborhood and its features after reading about its accessibility to 8th street, and it does seem like that area is on the verge of being more active than it currently is on non-game days. Thanks again for the feedback.

I have friends at 909 New Jersey Ave. The neighborhood itself is awesome but I have heard similar things to what other posters have said about the different buildings having slightly different reputations as far as noise, parties, generally a younger and more loud/social population in some versus quieter professional adults in others.
You also might want to consider noise from the baseball games depending on how close you are to the stadium and whether your apartment faces toward it.
But the location is really awesome.
