Where's the best apple picking orchard near DC?

We have some guests coming in from out of town who have never been apple picking. Can folks recommend their favorite orchards? We won't have kids with us, so not a component, necessarily, to consider. We're also willing to travel a bit if it's worth it. Thanks!

My favorite place to pick apples in the area is Larriland Farm in Woodbine, MD (Howard County). It's probably about a 45-50 minute drive from DC, but it's worth it. I've also been picking at Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD, but over the last few years I've found their apples to be more hit or miss. Have fun!

I'd second the Larriland Farms recommendation. My friends and I (all 20-somethings) have gone for the past 2 consecutive years, and it's definitely the best. There's a healthy mix of families and yuppies, but I never felt overwhelmed by the presence of the children there. Realistically, it's probably starting to be a little late in the season from prime apple picking (at any farm), so I'd call their hotline to see what's left. Otherwise, they have plenty of other fruits/vegetables for you to pick/cut (chard, broccoli, etc.), and probably the most beautiful and biggest pumpkin patch I've ever seen at. Definitely worth the drive out, which is scenic in and off itself.

Was at Homestead last weekend - a lot of the apple varieties have already been picked, they only have Pink Ladies left. Great deals to be had on pumpkins, mums, butternut squash and DECORATIVE GOURDS. Love me some ugly gourds.
Homestead is OVERRUN with families and kids. It definitely does not follow the credo of the Milford School.
