Hi Popville,
My boyfriend & I are planning a trip to the Caribbean some time in mid-July & have no idea which island to visit. We don't dive, but are really into snorkeling and would like a place with sandy beaches, a laidbacked feel, beautiful scenery, and maybe a few adventures.
We would like good food options, but don't mind if there is a ton of nightlife or not. More»

I just took a job which is going to require me to travel to an office in Chantilly, VA as often as three times a week, and I am trying to figure out how (if possible) to make the trip using public transit. Google has not been very helpful, and I suspect that I have no options other than to figure out some sort of ridesharing/car purchasing thing, the latter of which will basically destroy the salary raise I got by taking the job in the first place. Any ideas how I can make the commute? Bicycling is an option, but realistically I can only do it once or tw... More»

Ugh, so I scratched someone's bumper today on the street in Woodley Park. It already had a few dings on it, but my scratch was pretty noticeable so I left a note anyway. Now that I've done that, what are the odds of the owner of the car calling or trying to rip me off? I'm reading that bumper repair can be pretty costly. Should I insist on getting multiple written estimates? Is it better to go through insurance or pay up on my own? For what it's worth, my car is pretty old, so I have super basic insurance and am not sure this sort of thing would even be ... More»

I have noticed that fares from DC to VA on the green line seem to be lower than those from DC to MD. I was wondering why this is the case. I thought I'd see if any one had any ideas.
For instance, Columbia Heights to College Park (15 mins ride 4 stops in between) leaving after 7 am on a weekday costs $3.35, but leaving at the same time on a weekday, Columbia Heights to Ballston (32 minute ride, change to the orange line and 16 stops in between) is $3.20 More»

I'm totally exhausted and am looking for 2-3 nights away from DC in mid-May. I want to sit by a pool and drink gin and tonics and that's just about all I want to do . Delaware looks nice but don't see any resort type hotels with pools. Ocean City and Virginia Beach would be ok - but everything seems kid centric. Are there any recommendations for great hotel pools that don't cater to kids / families? West Coast I'd be thinking Palm Springs, Huntington Beach or even Vegas - I just don't know what to do (short of flying out west...) More»

Does anyone know of a good hike/camping area in about a 2 hour radius of DC (or more if it's really awesome)? I want to do a sizable hike and be able to set up camp for a day or two and hike back. More»

My roommate and I went out to his car last night (the 19th), and noticed a ticket on the windshield. At first came the typical outrage, as he has all the proper registration and stickers up to date, and was legally parked. But we then noticed the "emergency no parking" sign attached to a nearby tree. However, the date for no parking started on the 20th. After closer inspection, we saw that the sign had been posted on the 19th, and took effect on the 20th, but the parking ticket was issued at 7:17am on the 19th. I'm trying to figure out a way the cop coul... More»

I'm moving from a house over a mile away from the Friendship Heights metro with a private driveway to a house that is 3 blocks from Woodley Park (close to the zoo) where I'll be parking on the street. There have been a fair number of reports of car break-ins on the neighborhood listserv. I drive a 21-year-old, kind of crappy looking car, but it probably is one of the easier ones to steal. I guess my biggest issue is having to deal with broken windows. What do you think would be a better way of preventing this (I don't plan to leave anything of value in m... More»

Hey folks,
PoP covered the launch of my WMATA bus tracking app a few weeks ago: http://www.popville.com/2013/0...br />I wanted to let the community know that I just released a new version with one of the most highly requested features: favorite stops! (Plus the original features: find bus stops near you, see when the next bus is arriving, and see route maps for every line.)
The app is free on the iPhone. You can get it here: http://j-ro.github.com/WheresT...br />Hope you like it, and as always, send in your commen... More»

I'm moving into a group house that is located in a different zone than where I am living now. There is no lease but I'm going to try and get my name on a utility bill as soon add I move in. However, I'll have to wait a while to receive that proof of address. How would I go about getting an RPP in the ? Will changing my address online through the DMV site be sufficient or is there anything else I need to do? More»

Does anyone have a travel agent they can recommend in the DC area? I am looking to plan a trip with multiple destinations and when using online resources, they always create round-trip flights. I was wondering if a travel agent might be able to more successfully string together multiple one-way trips without it costing a fortune. Any experience anyone has (or other ideas for how to do this online) would be appreciated. More»

I've tried it several times in the past and never even gotten a response besides the automatic e-mail. Anyone ever actually found something this way? Fortunately it's never been anything of great value for me, I'm just curious. More»

Come meet with Metro this Monday (28th) evening, 7:30pm @ the JCC (16th & Q)
Many residents have been sharing their concerns about their morning commutes – especially on the 16th Street bus line – the line with the highest ridership in the District (see some of their comments BELOW).
Below Columbia Road, these S2/S4 buses are too often full and pass by without picking up passengers. This is especially difficult on cold winter mornings, but it is a problem year-round.
Urban commutes are never going to be perfect, bu... More»

I have the option of taking a dog into work, but I take the bus to work. The dog in question is a small beagle, and WMATA says that it's fine to take a companion animal on the bus/metro in a secure carrier. Has anyone had experience traveling with a companion animal like this? Or know anyone? More»

I noticed this morning that there are new red signs on Church St NW between 14th and 15th that make the north side of the street resident (zone 2) parking ONLY from 7a-10p almost the entire week. The south side of the street has the same 2 hour parking signs with zone 2 permit holders excepted.
Does anyone know how this came about or what the process is for doing this on other blocks? (Or if these signs have been put up anywhere else in Zone 2 recently?) More»
