  • Random Question - "He stole my phone"

    pixelww

Random question but I just saw a women running south, down the middle of 14th Street from the corner of 14th and Irving. I was too far away to see much beyond her, but I could hear her yelling: "he stole my phone, he stole my phone!" She was booking it and then I saw a security guard and someone else give chase, then a few minutes later heard police cars/sirens screeching in the background.
I am sure running down the middle of the street and also chasing a thief will be debated as to smart/not smart, but my question is - does anyone know how it ended?...  More»

  • If and how to go to small claims court?

    Guest

We've just bought a house - a flip, so perhaps caveat emptor - but the contractor has clearly done crap work. The dishwasher was installed wrong, and has flood water that has warped the floorboards and come out the light fixtures in the apartment below, and may need to be replaced. A poorly fitted bathroom pipe has already leaked through the ceiling below it, and will cost about $500 in repairs. In the rental apt basement, there is no power to the outlet where the washing machine should go. We havent bothered the contractor with any of this stuff (becaus...  More»

These problems sound eerily similar to issues we uncovered in a house inspection at the end of last year. We eventually bailed on the house because of the inspection report. If you're comfortable giving out the address, e-mail me at [email protected] See More »
  • Does anyone know what's going on with the helicopter in NW?

    dc_director

For the last 30 minutes or so, a helicopter has been circling NW, sweeping searches with a spotlight. Having a devil of a time finding local news: anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?  More»

  • Have You Seen My Cat?

    lookingfordean

My AC contractors left the door open for hours (ignoring the signs on the door saying to keep the door closed because of the cats), and Dean escaped. He is one year old, gray tabby (gray fur with white stripes) and small. He is shy around strangers and isn't wearing a collar.
Last seen around 14th and Decatur.
If you have any information, please call 300-900-2036.
    Thanks so much.  More»

We used this guy when we had some small electrical issues. Showed up same day, although was a few hours behind his original estimated arrival, but did the work quickly, relatively cheaply, and was very upfront with standardized pricing, which I grealty appreciated.

  • Metal door frame replacement

    dcnick

    Hey PoPville,
My house has metal door frames and the basement exterior door frame is rusted and disintegrated at the bottom. It and the door need to be replaced. Can anyone recommend a contractor? It doesn't need to be fancy. I just want something that will keep out unwanted people, bugs, and water. I will also want to find out about security door options. It currently has a security door.
    Thanks,

  • recommendation for refinishing original door trim and banister?

    helvetica

I'm interested in refiishing the original floors, stairs, banister, and wood trim around all of the door openings in a 1920s house. I've talked to a couple of floor finishers, but they ONLY do the floors and stair treads and risers (not the other woodwork). Who do you call to refinish the banisters and door trim? Any recommendations out there for companies that do all of this wood work, or someone for just the banister and door trim? Thanks!  More»

Hi. I have a 1917 row house, i've been doing the same thing - removing layers of paint from all my trim and doors. For the removable stuff, doors and moulding, I take my stuff to Bob Reed. • Affordable Wrought Iron Railing Options?

    petworthresident

I'm looking to install a very simple exterior iron railing for two sets of steps in the front of our rowhouse. I received one quote from a guy who wanted $800 for a basic railing that spanned 5 steps...which feels like robbery to me.
I am hoping someone has a good recommendation for either a.) a local iron work shop or a local handy man who has a price that comes in WAY under that, or b.) knows of an online source of pre-fab or custom iron stair railings.

  • Informal dog adoption advice?

    caitb

So since POPville loves dogs, I thought I'd ask for advice. We've thought long and hard about it (for years!), looked at our schedules and finances, and have finally decided that we're ready to adopt a dog!

I grew up with dogs and have adopted several cats from the shelter, but I'm honestly pretty nervous about the process of adopting a dog. In particular, our first cat seemed like a super laid lounger at the shelter, then did an energy 180 once we got him home and out of a stressful situation that had turned him a totally different animal. He turn...  More»

  • Fake "inspectors" in Columbia Heights?

    Guest

We have houseguests from Germany staying with us, and they called us at work this morning to let us know that someone rang the bell, claiming to be "an inspector" and asking to come into the house. Being from out of the country, and us not being home, she told him he's have to come back later. Obviously, I dont know whether this person had any sort of ID/badge/etc that Imight have recognized, but I know that this is not an uncommon scam, so I just wanted to see if anyone else in Columbia Heights/Park View/Pleasant Plains/Petworth has had a similar experi...  More»
